The teaching about mother god rests upon Genesis chapter 1. If it can be shown that mother god was not involved in the creation of mankind, then the entire doctrine about her importance and her very existence crumbles. This would demonstrate that the WMSCOG is a false church teaching false doctrine, and anyone who trusts in their version of God is embracing a false gospel as well as offering idolatrous worship to a non-existent deity. So what does Genesis 1 actually tell us about who created mankind?
“Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.” GENESIS 1:26
In Genesis 1:26 we see God refer to Himself three times with the plural pronouns “us” and “our.” The WMSCOG interprets this as referencing two separate “Gods”; God the Father and “god the mother.” If we look at the very next verse however, it becomes clear that this is not the case. Verse 27 switches to using only singular pronouns to refer to God, revealing to us that the God who created mankind was a single God.
“So God created man in His own image;in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” GENESIS 1:27
Notice in verse 27 that God is referred to three separate times with “male” and “singular” pronouns. Never is God referred to as “they” to infer that more than one single God exists and never is any indication given that he exists as both male and female.
“His own image…” “He created him…” “He created them…”
What Genesis clearly reveals to us here is that the God who created mankind is both a “single” being – existing as ONE God – and HE is referred to in only masculine terms. What is also incredibly significant in this verse is that it makes sure to distinguish mankind as both “male” and “female,” but this distinction is never made for God. The last phrase of this verse is especially significant…
“male and female HE (singular, masculine) created THEM (plural, both male and female).”
This phrase describes mankind as “male and female” and “them.” This informs us that within the category of “humankind” there are 2 different genders and 2 different beings. However, when describing God, the word “He” is used, informing us that within the category of “God” only one gender exists and only one single being.
If God existed as both male and female, then Genesis certainly would have specified this in the same way that it specified it for mankind. But it doesn’t. Instead it tells us that God is one single being and He is described in only male terms. In fact, this one God is described throughout the entire Genesis account and the rest of the Bible in only masculine terms. If God is both a male and a female God, then why doesn’t Genesis tell us? The author of Genesis makes sure to specify for us that mankind exists as both male and female, so certainly they would have also specified this if it was also true about God. The fact that it only refers to God in masculine terms is proof that God is not both male and female as the WMSCOG claims. There is simply no support for the concept of a female “god” in the Genesis account. If the creation of mankind involved two Gods (both Father and Mother) then Genesis 1:27 would certainly have said something more along these lines…
“male and female, they created them…”or…“male and female, He and She created them…”
Genesis 1:26 does indeed tell us that there was another person with God involved in the creation of man. But, since Genesis 1:27 tells us that God alone created man, then we must assume that whoever it was that was with God during the creation was Himself God. So who do we know of in the Bible that is described as being both “with” God while at the same time “being” God? The first chapter of John may help us out here…
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made.” JOHN 1:1-3
John informs us that all things were made through Jesus and that He existed in the beginning “with” God and that He “was” God. John seems to have left us with little need to theorize about the identity of the persons referenced in Genesis 1:26. What we most likely have in these few beginning chapters of the Bible is the first indications of the mysterious and glorious doctrine of the Trinity.
WHERE IS MOTHER GOD IN GENESIS?
The questions should be asked – if Mother God is so significant to man’s creation and salvation, then why is she never referenced in the Genesis account? Why does Genesis describe mankind as both male and female but describe God as only male? Why does Genesis use plural terms like “them” to reference humankind but use singular terms “He” and “Him” to refer to God? The answer is simple – mother god does not exist. What we learn from Genesis then is that only one God was involved in the creation of mankind, and HE was not assisted by another god, just as other scriptures testify to us in places like Isaiah 44:24, Job 9:8, John chapter 1 and Colossians 1:16. God alone created mankind as well as the rest of the universe, and He exists as a God to whom it is only appropriate to refer to in masculine terms. This God exists eternally as 3 distinct persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – in one being of God.
