God turns our ideas of wisdom and strength upside down. Human wisdom sends us on an empty pursuit of attaining honor, wealth and security through our own strength and self-exertion. This pursuit is ultimately fueled by pride and selfishness. Jesus teaches us that the one who truly wants to be “first” must be willing to become “second.” The one who wants to attain true glory and honor must be willing to accept the humble attitude of being a servant to all, and like a child, embrace full reliance on God rather than on their own strength and abilities. The on who humbles themself in this way will be exalted by God.
